Lower Laborer Ravine

Tabla de contenidos

The Barranco de la Peonera Inferior is the most fun of all the canyons in Guara. None can compare to it, it is the Aquapark de la Sierra.

Almost 4 hours of jumping into pools of emerald water, slides, beautiful galleries and flooded chaos in which the game with water and the sun is continuous. Its finish, at the Salto de la Presa de Bierge, is the icing on the cake.

But be careful, we have to evaluate well, because Peonera is a sleeping giant… any increase in the normal flow can unleash the fury of the longest and largest river in the Sierra de Guara.

Its avenues are wild and its descent, with a high flow, can be tragic.

The lower peonera ravine consists of two parts: the Estrechos de Fornazos and the Estrechos del Puntillo, between them, the canyon opens up and is the place where we stop to eat, on the sunny shores, next to the Tamara Spring. This decline is one of those that are remembered. La Peonera brings out the child in us to play.

Barranco de la Peonera

The Alcanadre is the king of the rivers of the Sierra de Guara, it is the longest and the one with the greatest flow, its avenues are usually spectacular. Due to the force of the water, it has been carving different canyons throughout its route that delight lovers of Canyoning. The last of these canyons that the river has opened before calming its bravery on the flat land, is called La Peonera inferior.

If there is a descent that brings out the child that we all carry asleep inside, this is it. Their descent is an exaltation of the joy of living, which leaves no one indifferent. It is an authentic aquapark made of large limestone walls and magical emerald green water. It is a friendly route, as there are no mandatory steps and we always have an alternative easy passage. This descent, despite being Initiation, has one more gear than the Lower Verus. by duration, hardness of the approach and flow. That will require a slightly better state of form.

In the car park set up for this purpose on the same road to Rodellar, we have to leave the vehicle and start the approach march. Previously we will have left another car at El Salto de Bierge, the end of the descent to facilitate our return. We take the impedimenta and walk along a firebreak to the very edge of the canyon, where the well-known “Path of the Snail Belt” awaits us. The view from this cliff is impressive.

A tortuous and steep path that demands good legs and attention in the pass, awaits us. These vertiginous trails were used by fishermen and boxwood spooners who formerly approached these payments, looking for means of subsistence. Shortly after starting to walk, we finally arrived at the river. It’s time to sit down to take a breath and snack on something. The guide will take the opportunity to give us the pertinent explanations of the descent.

The time comes and cheerfully, we put on our wetsuits and helmet. The adventure begins!

The first section of the Canyon is called Estrechos de los Fornazos, it is the most sporty section where winding corridors, siphons, protrusions, flooded grottos, exciting siphons, large chaos of blocks where light plays a leading role. The guide will lead us in complete safety, taking advantage of every corner and draining all the fun that can be squeezed out of the place. The last corridors cross the mountain in a more somber atmosphere, which contrasts with the blow of light that greets us when we reach the Fuente de Tamara, a spring of fresh water that gives us a refreshing drink.

From here the cannon opens like a grenade and the spirit widens, our gaze can be launched more than 100 meters away. It is a good place to stop for lunch, bathed in the sun and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the canyon. We have to walk for several minutes along an open riverbed, splashing between stones. With some luck, we will see vultures, Egyptian vultures flying over the river… and sometimes some bearded vultures.

Suddenly the river disappears in a powerful fissure, it is the beginning of the second section of the canyon, called Estrechos del Puntillo. This is the official “jump” of the descent, the place where the most jumps are chained. The advantage of this descent is that all the jumps, which are up to 12 meters, are avoidable. You don’t have to be afraid if you don’t want to… Everyone can administer the dose of emotion they want. It is a descent that can be made easy or it can be complicated… We can turn into chickens or lions to the taste of the moment:)

From El Puntillo to the end of the descent, we have a water walk along the open river for about 25 minutes. Sometimes the water is up to our ankles, sometimes up to our knees. This is the last gift of this generous and beautiful descent: an aquagym session in which the thighs are toned great.

The Salto de Bierge shows us an imposing waterfall in its dam, which will be the icing on the cake. Here we will change and with the car, which we left at the beginning of the morning, we will go up to pick up the one that was left in the Peonera car park.

The day is coming to an end, but we will be tired and happy to have enjoyed a fantastic day of canyoning in the Sierra de Guara… Thinking about returning with friends, or family… because the Lower Pawn is a premium descent… who always waits for a second time.
